EU expects independent investigation in Egypt

Statement by High Representative Catherine Ashton, on EU response on the football tragedy in Egypt.

The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, made today the following statement: "I have conveyed to the Egyptian authorities my deepest condolences to the people of Egypt for the tragic loss of so many lives yesterday at a football match in Port Said.

My thoughts go out to the families and friends who lost loved ones in this tragedy. I also wish the many injured a full and speedy recovery.  I hope an immediate and independent investigation will shed light on the causes of this tragic event."
