
I am pleased to be with you today at the opening of this Fourth International SME conference, which will focus on the role of the public sector in supporting the development of SMEs.The European Commission has just published its Progress Report on Serbia for 2006 last week. May I therefore avail myself of this opportunity to recall the most relevant findings of this Report in the economic area.
View activitySpeaking at the opening of the International Seminar on Sustainable Development in Belgrade, Ambassador Lloveras said: "Some people might fear that European integration could disregard if not even conflict with the preservation of natural heritage and culture. Let me clearly state that the contrary is true, namely that this region needs to protect its rich cultural background so as to be able to better project it into the enlarged Europe. The region of South East Europe boasts remarkable cultural treasures with a unique identity, of which 54 are listed as world heritage. The preservation of these historic monuments and sites as well as their sustainable management and promotion is of key importance if we want to bring our common European cultural heritage to the fore."

Amongst the priorities for reforms in Serbia as stated in the European Partnership there is: the development of local and regional administrative, infrastructural and business support structures, strengthening the capacity of the public administration at government and local levels and the adoption and implementation of decentralisation reform which will ensure the viability of local governments, said Josep M.
