
The EU has invested in the past 7 years €23 million in physicial reconstruction of the Horgos border crossing with Hungary, the Batrovci border crossing with Croatia, border crossing Presevo with FYROM as well as reconstruction of the railway border crossing Dimtrovgrad with Bulgaria.

The European Union has so far spent € 26 million for the provision of durable solutions to the problems of housing and employment for the refugees and internally displaced persons leaving collective centres, as well as for the socially most vulnerable categories in Serbia. Another € 15 million has been allocated from the pre-accession funds for similar purposes.

Minimum grant amount per project is € 1 million and the maximum is € 2 million on condition that the grantees provide from five to 35% of the total amount. Projects should aim towards local integration of refugees and internally displaced persons through long-term solutions relating to housing, employment and general improvement of living conditions.

Goran Knezevic, Zrenjanin’s mayor thanked ambassador Lloveras, Daniel Giuglaris, Head of the European Agency for Reconstruction in Serbia and ambassador of the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Serbia Ron Van Dartel for the visit and highlighted the significance of the donation to the industrially developed and geographically important part of Serbia.

During the French presidency of the EU numerous manifestations and events will be organized in Serbia, and a number of Serbian towns will be visited. Ambassador Teral said that he would keep up the Slovenian initiative to hold regular monthly meetings with Heads of Missions of EU Member States in Serbia not only in Belgrade but also in other Serbian towns. In accordance with this, October meeting will be held in Novi Sad, and the November one in Niš, after which the European Troika (French, Czech and EC Delegation ambassadors) will visit Preševo. These visits to Serbian towns will be enriched with other programmes such as visits to EU-financed projects, talks to students and pupils, business people and representatives of non-governmental organizations, as well as rock concerts.

Serbia needs to mobilise all its resources to match its ambitious programme. The next Parliament and Government will need to forge a broad consensus on European integration so that Serbia can speed up the necessary reforms, ” LLoveras says.
