
European Union has so far donated over 4 million euros in the modernisation of Serbian customs service. In 2010, Serbian custosms will get the state-of-the-art equpment – 11 scanners for examining goods at border crossings and Belgrade airport, as well as a boat to help combat smuggling on waterways.

The EU stressed the importance of effective implementation of new legislation in areas such as competition, state aid control, intellectual property law and public procurement. It also encouraged Serbia to adopt rapidly the new law on consumer protection. These measures will help ensuring level playing field for companies, less burden for tax-payers and better prices and products for consumers

On 2 March 2010 the first meeting of the Interim Committee under the EU-Serbia Interim Agreement was held in Belgrade. The meeting was chaired by Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Mr Bozidar Djelic. The EU was represented by Mr Pierre Mirel, Director in the European Commission Directorate General for Enlargement. The Interim Agreement which entered into force on 1 February 2010 covers trade and other important policies related to trade such as competition, state aid, intellectual property law and transit traffic.

Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission will visit Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Kosovo from 17 to 19 February 2010. Ms Ashton will meet with political leaders and civil society representatives as well as with representatives of the EU Missions in the region, including the EULEX mission in Kosovo and the EUFOR ALTHEA and EUPM missions in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
